Review: Atlantic Jazz: Saxophones gathers some of the label's most memorable sax performances, including a live version of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's 'If I Loved You', John Coltrane's 'Giant Steps', Ornette Coleman's 'Lonely Woman', Yusef Lateef's 'Russell and Eliot', and Hank Crawford's 'Lorelei's Lament'. Sonny Stitt, Eddie Harris, Charles Lloyd, and David "Fathead" Newman. Atlantic Jazz: Saxophones works as a fine companion piece to Rhino's Atlantic reissues, featuring definitive cuts from the trad jazz, bop, and free jazz saxophonists that defined the label's historic roster. Review: The first of several tribute albums issued just after Jobim's death, this one generally sticks to Jobim's most famous songs as interpreted by several Brazilian and American artists from PolyGram's archives. Jobim himself appears on such obvious choices as the best-selling Stan Getz/Joao and Astrud Gilberto hit 'The Girl From Ipanema', and with Astrud on 'Agua De Beber' and 'Dindi', and again with the late Elis Regina on an 'Aguas de Marco' that nearly breaks up with laughter. The American contributions are a mixed bag; Sarah Vaughan's 'Corcovado', for example, is rather inappropriately overwrought but Wes Montgomery's 'How Insensitive' is a beautiful recording, with Jobim's favored arranger Claus Ogerman in top wistful form. The other jazzers on the CD are Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Shirley Horn and Dizzy Gillespie, proving that Jobim's timelessly aching music attracted quite a diverse cross-section of admirers. Review: For almost a decade Bluesville operated as a subsidiary label to the indie jazz pioneer Prestige Records. With a chaotic catalog, they issued everything from barrelhouse piano players working with hipster jazz combos to semi-pro street singers to tons of Lightnin' Hopkins albums. What we have here are the beginnings of the modern blues album as we know it. The Bluesville label captured that awkward moment in time where the blues first lost its commercial restraints and started making music of a different power and a nice cross section of it is here on all four of these volumes. There's a decidedly acoustic air to everything here, even the wilder Chicago sides. If you've been brought up on a steady blues album diet of electric guitars and heavy drumming, some of this will sound almost quaint by comparison, but it's well worth a listen. The first entry in the series, Big Blues, Honks and Wails features tracks by piano giants Sunnyland Slim and Roosevelt Sykes and uptown blues belters Mildred Anderson, Jimmy Witherspoon and Al Smith paired with small, jazz oriented combos with sax legends King Curtis, Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis and Clifford Scott honkin' away. Review: Issued nearly a year after Jobim's death, this 3 CD set is ground zero, the place to start if you don't have any Jobim in your collection or for anyone who wants a single package of his multifaceted art. The set encompasses not only Jobim's own sporadic work for Verve from 1963 until his final 1994 Carnegie Hall concert and the two A&M albums of 1967 and 1970, but also sessions led by Stan Getz, Joao and Astrud Gilberto in which Jobim appeared as a sideman. guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, who selected the music for this set, follows a unique game plan, devoting disc 1 to vocal renditions of Jobim's songs, disc 2 to instrumental versions, and disc 3 to multiple comparisons of a few Jobim standards by different performers. The selections are often adventurous, and the programming digs deeply into Jobim's PolyGram catalog for such overlooked gems as the bossa waltz 'Mojave', the sly 'Captain Bacardi', and the self-mocking 'Chansong'. For casual listening, discs one and two flow beautifully, and even disc three works, for despite the repetition of tunes, the approaches are varied enough to keep one's attention. Jobim collectors probably have almost everything on the set anyway, as there are no unreleased tracks other than a humorous uncredited rehearsal of 'Aguas de Marco' tacked onto the end of 'Vivo Sonhando'. But they are certain to be

attracted by the unique packaging, a double-spiraled fold-out book containing lots of fascinating interviews and essays, and 3 discs wrapped in paper cut-outs environmentally designed to look like fish, flowers, and leaves. The CD is packaged with a 60-page book with photos, a biography of A.C. Jobim and several interviews with him and his colleagues. The 3 CDs include selections from the albums Elis And Tom, Wave, Tide, The Composer Of Desafinado Plays, Passarim, Stan Getz's Jazz Samba Encore!, 'The Astrud Gilberto Album', Carnegie Hall Salutes The Jazz Masters, Getz / Gilberto, Ellis Especial and the film 'Gabriela'.

Review: The sequel to the popular The Girl From Ipanema anthology basically reshuffles the deck, duplicating nine of the earlier CD's songs and adding six new ones, using mostly the same performers with a few additions. The new wrinkle is that the artists perform different tunes, a game that one imagines could be continued indefinitely on future issues. Among the highlights: Ella Fitzgerald has a marvelous time bouncing to the rhythms of 'So Danco Samba', Wes Montgomery the consummate musician scores again with a lovely 'Amor Em Paz', Oscar Peterson is a surreal speed demon on 'Triste'. Lowlight: Sarah Vaughan's awkwardly mannered 'The Boy For Ipanema'. Again, there is plenty of Stan Getz, along with his tenor sax success, or in matters Jobim, Joe Henderson, plus Astrud and Joao Gilberto, Dizzy Gillespie, Toots Thielemans, Charlie Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, and Jobim himself. As a jazz buff's introduction to Jobim, either Songbook will do, but Verve's The Man From Ipanema triple album is the best, most comprehensively idiomatic choice overall. Review: This is a very fine recording. I´d say early Sixties. The big band consists of a French Horn section as opposed to a sax section. Dizzy's small group including Leo Wright and Lalo Schifrin is the main unit us- ing the Big Band as a accompanist (if I can put it that way) 'Night In Tunisia' is excellent ! The rest of the tunes are great, 'This Is The Way' features Leo Wright. I would say if you like Dizzy, check it out !

Review: Jazz 'Round Midnight is an enjoyable budget-priced sampler of 14 songs from Antonio Carlos Jobim's stint at Verve. While this collection is hardly definitive, it is quite enjoyable, sporting an appealingly lowkey, seductive atmosphere and several dynamite performances, including versions of 'Passarim', 'Amor Em Paz (Once I Loved)',  'So Danco Samba (Jazz Samba)', 'Samba de Uma Nota So (One Note Samba)', 'Looks Like December', 'No More Blues', 'Luiza' and 'Insensatez (How Insensitive)'. Reviews: Whether this is truly the 'best' of Witherspoon is debatable - there's nothing predating 1956 - however, it's a good 20-track sampling of 1956-66 material, favoring (but not limited to) his sessions for Prestige. Witherspoon puts his imprint on a lot of Blues / R&B classics - 'Good Rockin´ Tonight', 'Bad Bad Whiskey', 'One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer', 'C. C. Rider', 'Money's Gettin' Cheaper', 'T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness' - and while not everyone will find these to be his definitive versions, they are all good ones. The roster of jazz luminaries heard at one point or another over the course of the disc is staggering, including Coleman Hawkins, Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan, T-Bone Walker, Kenny Burrell and Pepper Adams. Never do they overshadow the singer, and on the whole this is one of the better jazz/ blues vocal collections available, displaying his skill in both small combos and big bands.
                              --
This lovingly assembled compilation of recordings by one of the great blues singers, Jimmy Witherspoon (1923-97), begins and ends on two of the highest notes in his discography. 'Good Rockin´ Tonight' and 3 other tunes come from a 1956 World Pacific date with a swinging band of West Coast-based jazz stars and there's plenty of room for solos by Teddy Edwards on tenor, Harry Sweets Edison on trumpet and others. Witherspoon was at the peak of his powers in the mid-50ies, but blues shouting had fallen out of fashion and it was a tough time for the singer, who had had a No.1R&B hit in 1949 with 'T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness'. Then in 1959, a short-lived label called Hitjazz recorded Spoon

live at the Monterey Jazz Festival and at LA's Renaissance Club with jazz giants Gerry Mulligan (baritone solo on 'How Long Blues') and Ben Webster (tenor solo on 'Bizness') and his career was rejuvenated as soon as the LPs hit the streets. The music in this collection, spanning ten years, shows that Spoon was equally at ease in the blues and jazz worlds. 'Money's Getting Cheaper', for example, finds him in the company of guitarist T-Bone Walker and the bar-walking tenor of Clifford Scott. In contrast, on 'Bad Bad Whiskey' he's backed by the bebop alto of Leo Wright and the quintessential jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell. In the 1980's, Witherspoon battled throat cancer but he came back and was still shouting the blues at the Chicago Jazz Festival shortly before his death. The 20 songs on this CD only hint at the recorded legacy he left behind, but it's a good place to start if you'd have any Spoon in your library (and you should).
