Reviews: One of the rare few albums that Jon Hendricks cut on his own during the early 60s, and a very tasty batch of Jazz vocal tracks recorded with backing by Pony Poindexter, Gildo Mahones, Ike Isaacs, and other unsung early 60s soul jazz greats. Hendricks is hitting a style here that adds some 50s R&B roots into his usual bop vocalese approach - dipping back to his roots as a songwriter in the early 50s, but still sticking in the swingingly hip mode of his best 60s work. Fast Livin' Blues / Jon Hendricks

Review: This is the first of three albums by the vocal trio of Lambert, Hendricks and Bavan (Yolande Bavan had just recently become Annie Ross' replacement) . This recording finds Jon Hendricks and Dave Lambert in prime form, with Bavan doing her best to fit in (her accent does stand out, although her singing skills are impressive); the backup group features solos from Pony Poindexter on soprano and pianist Gildo Mahones. The highlights include a classic rendition of 'Doodlin'', John Coltrane's 'Cousin Mary', Hendricks' humorous 'Feed Me' and 'Dis Hyunh' (really 'This Here'). An entertaining performance overall, recorded during a three-day period.
--
For the Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan trio, Lambert and Hendricks had to take a chance on Bavan, who they met in London. She arrived just before a concert in Schenectady/NY, and on stage, within minutes, Lambert and Hendricks knew their gamble had paid off. This is a live album recorded at Basin Street East in NYC, with the groups´ regular jazz band, and it cooks throughout! 11 tunes'. LHB is in their element here, scatting their butts off, having fun, so is the audience, and so are we!"

Reviews: After Yolande Bavan replaced an ill Annie Ross in 1962, the vocal trio of Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan recorded three albums before disbanding in early 1964. This CD has some of the highpoints from each of the three albums: a trio date with guest Pony Poindexter on soprano from Basin Street East, an appearance at the 1963 Newport Jazz Festival (which has spots for trumpeter Clark Terry and tenorst Coleman Hawkins) and a performance from the Village Gate with cornetist Thad Jones and tenorman Booker Ervin. All of the guests get some solo space and the vocalists particularly sound strong on 'Doodlin', 'Cousin Mary', 'Swingin' Till the Girls Come Home', Hendricks' 'Gimme That Wine', 'Watermelon Man' and 'Cloudburst'. The Ceylonese singer Bavan definitely gave the group a slightly different sound than it had had with Ross, but she was not as strong a soloist although Bavan fared well in the ensembles. This CD gives one a definitive look at the group and is well worth picking up.

The basic band is Gildo Mahones (p), George Tucker (b), Jimmie Smith (dr). Pony Poindexter appears on (ss on 3 cuts), Coleman & Terry appear on 2, and Booker Ervin & Thad Jones appear on 3 tracks. All the guests deliver great solos, fully living up to their reputations. This received ****1/2 stars by Downbeat when initially released. Awarded **** by Penguin Guide to Jazz.

Review: The sound is not very good, but listenable. Recorded in the audience by Al Anthon. It seems that this CD was not sold in every country as it's probably not official. For example, in France, it has been removed from the record dealers, just a few weeks after the release. So it's hard to find now. Paris 1964 / René Thomas

and original Charlie Parker solo based on "Honeysuckle Rose".

Reviews: Great modal swinging European jazz originally recorded on the MPS label. For this brainchild of Joachim Berendt, 4 top altoists (Lee Konitz, Pony Poindexter, Phil Woods & Leo Wright) team up with a fine rhythm section (bassist Palle Danielsson, drummer Jon Christensen) led by pianist Steve Kuhn to explore a variety
of challenging material, mostly originals. There are two quintets but otherwise all of the performances are by the full septet. A four-song ballad medley goes well until the ending when all of the saxophonists solo together quite chaotically to unintentionally hilarious effect. Much better is 'Lee's Tribute to Bach and Bird', which goes from a Bach piece to Charlie Parker's solo on 'Honeysuckle Rose', played by all four altoists. Native Land is a cracker. If you like German jazz you´ll love this.
--
There are four pieces for the full septet (incl. one that pays tribute to both Bach and Bird), a pair of quintet performances and a ballad medley that ends in a complete fiasco (it has to be heard to be believed). Despite the latter, everyone fares well on this summit meeting.

Review: Previously unreleased material from the late 50´s and early 60´s. This LP (released by Columbia in 1983) contains 8 previously "lost" recordings that were released for the first time. Many all-stars appear and there are some historic performances. Drummer Dave Bailey leads a sextet in 1960 also featuring trumpeter Clark Terry, trombonist Curtis Fuller and Junior Cook on tenor. Terry interacts with the great tenor Coleman Hawkins on a 1962 version of 'Ain't Misbehavin', altoist Pony Poindexter performs an alternate take of his 'Lanyop' in 1962 with five other saxophonists including Eric Dolphy, and Wes Montgomery is heard on 'Love for Sale' in 1955, four years before his discovery. Side two of this LP has trumpeter Johnny Coles leading a quartet with pianist Randy Weston, trombonist Slide Hampton at the head of an 11-pie- ce group, the English tenor Tubby Hayes in a quintet with Clark Terry and a combo matching together trombonist J.J. Johnson and cornetist Nat Adderley in 1958. The bop-oriented music is consistently rewarding, making this an album well worth searching for. Instrumentalists / Almost Forgotten - Various Artists

Review: The alto sax volume of the Jazz-Club series is organized in an individual way that illustrates the dominant influence of one man, over an entire generation of altoists, all born between 1923 and 1933. It starts out with 'Now's the Time' in the hands of Charlie Parker, the fountainhead of bop on the alto, and then mostly contemplates the ongoing adventures of the bopsters and the coolsters; in other words, the Parker and the anti-Parker. The most historic track - and the only example of pre-Parker styles - finds Benny Carter, Johnny Hodges and Parker trading blues licks for the first few minutes of a 13-plus-minute Norman Granz jam session on 'Funky Blues' (tenors Flip Phillips and Ben Webster also join in). Another, shorter alto summit, 'Prompt', throws together Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Leo Wright and Pony Poindexter. The rest of the estimable lineup in- cludes Bud Shank, Art Pepper, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Mariano, Paul Desmond (with Gerry Mulligan), Sonny Stitt, Jackie Mc Lean, Gigi Gryce, Eric Dolphy (drawing from Parker and Hodges with Charles Mingus' big band in 'Bemoanable Lady'), and Herb Geller. Review: Jingle Bell Swing is a refreshing idea in a Christmas collection, assembling a host of top-notch jazz musicians to breathe new life into the old holiday standbys.Big names abound here, including Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Louis Prima, Lambert, Hendricks Ross, Benny Goodman, Miles Davis, Tony Bennett, and Carmen McRae, plus several others. The selections mix standards and enjoyable lesser-known material, striking a nice balance between the two. The collection may not work well for listeners who simply enjoying singing along to straightforward readings of their favorite carols, but those looking for something different during the holidays may find this well worth their time. Review: Phantastic jazzy Christmas music! Columbia through the years has had several Christmas jazz samplers. This album is mostly from the 1961-62 period although there is an unusual version of 'Deck The Halls' that features both Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea on pianos in `69 with a nonet. Highlights include Duke Ellington's 'Jingle Bells', the Chico Hamilton Quintet playing 'Winter Wonderland', the Dave Brubeck Quartet romping through 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' and Bob Dorough's bah-humbug 'Blue Xmas' with Miles Davis.
