From an early age Polya enjoyed singing the Oriental,
Slavonic and Gypsy songs. In Paris, after taking her High School
Diploma, she embarked on a career as an actress at the Centre
d'Art Dramatique in the Rue Blanche and at the Conservatorie,
she was featured in "soubrette" roles of Moliere with actors
of the French Theater. When she met the American Bob Jordan
(an excellent jazz guitarist), it was love at first sight. She
married Bob Jordan and his jazz, and became passionately interested
in Gospel and the singing of Mahalia Jackson. |
|
Bob Jordan was immediately charmed by her voice and
impressed by the way she identified so deeply with the Gospel
tem- perament. They adopted her as one of the family, and
she sang for Lou Bennett, Benny Waters, Kenny Clark, Jimmy
Loverman and others. With Benny Waters she toured Europe and
jazz festivals in Scandinavia, Switzerland, Germany, New York,
London. Polya Jordan now appears regularly at various jazz
clubs in Paris, including 'Le Petit Journal Saint-Michel',
'Le Bilboquet' and the 'Latitudes Jazz Club'. |

Review: Jazz A Saint Germain is a fashionable tribute
to the French Jazz Club scene of the 40's & 50's, it is a present
day tribute recalling the great cabaret and torch songs of legendary
underground Parisian night-clubs such as the Tabou Cellar and Club Saint-Germain.
The 14 track album runs the gamut from torch songs to acid jazz. This
compilation of Continental/ Jazz fusion includes two of the most famous
French female pop stars, Jane Birkin and Françoise Hardy, in
duets with Jimmy Rowles and Iggy Pop, respectively. Elsewhere, great
tracks are turned in by Angelique Kidjo (she performs Gershwin's timeless
classic 'Summertime'), the Jazz Passengers with Debbie Harry, and Catherine
Ringer & the Renegade Brass Band. China's rendition of 'Lover Man'
and Patricia Kaas' singing 'Black Coffee' are both warm and sensual.
Dee Dee Bridgewater stylishly sings 'Watermelon Man' that is pure, smooth
funk. Language is no barrier as Les Nubians perform Monk's 'Round Midnight'
(Autour De Minuit). Just like Red, Hot & Blue these renditions of
the jazz classique are fresh, warm and above all honest with strong
cafe leanings. |

Jazz In Paris, Vol. 1: Champs-Élysées 1917-1949 / Various Artists
recorded: 1917 - June 1, 1975
issued: April 12, 2005, 3 CD Set VERVE 9812553
Review by Thom Jurek
This three-CD box set is the first of four volumes - each representing
a quarter of the city and a chronological period - that are designated
companions to the 100 albums in the Jazz in Paris collection. This
box covers the widest range chronologically, and does a fine job of
juxtaposing American jazz masters playing the city - in some cases
relocating there - and showcasing the burgeoning French and European
jazz scenes as well. What is beautiful about the assemblage here is
that nothing is organized strictly by chronology. Instead, the notion
of a journey up and down the famed street is pursued. Locations on
the Champs-Élysées are chosen, such as the legendary
cabaret Boeuf sur le Toit, (invented by Jean Cocteau). Some of the
music here was actually recorded live at the club as well as at the
various night spots and theaters surrounding it. In fact, the box's
first cut is actually by Cocteau with the Dan Parrish Orchestra from
1929. Also assembled here are a beautiful read of 'Mood Indigo' by
pianist Garland Wilson from 1933 and a beautiful 'Farewell Blues',
recorded by Benny Carter in 1938 with Django Reinhardt and Fletcher
Allen. Reinhardt is recorded at the Boeuf sur le Toit in 1947 with
the house band, and later with the Hot Club of France. Other French
jazz on Vol. 1 comes from the French Jazz Quintet, the Swing Royal
Orchestre Musette, and Christian Bellest. American expatriates Sidney
Bechet, Josephine Baker, Bill Coleman, and Don Byas are here as well.
The package is lavishly illustrated with a 60-page booklet featuring
tons of rare photographs of the street and culture as well as musicians
and clubs. There are concert programs, reproductions of record covers,
and excellent liner notes, personal reminiscences, footnotes, etc.
- all of them in both French and English lexicons. The price is very
attractive, making each of these four volumes almost irresistible
to historical jazz fans. |

Review by Thom Jurek
This 3-CD box set is the last of four volumes - each representing
a quarter of the city and a chronological period - that are designated
companions to the 100 albums in the Jazz in Paris collection. Vol.
4 winds the collection up in the late '50s with a wonderful assortment
of American and European jazzmen who played with and against each
other in the various nightspots and in recording studios around
the city. There are some real rarities here, including a Jean-Luc
Ponty performance form 1964, Donald Byrd's first trip to the city
in 1958, a soundtrack performance from Dizzy Gillespie, and some
stunning Stephane Grappelli duets, one pairing the violinist with
Oscar Peterson and another with Stuff Smith. Also here are Louis
Armstrong, a mainstay of Paris at this point in his career, and
an early concert appearance by the Quincy Jones Orchestra from 1960.
Toots Theilemans is in this set, as is Cat Anderson jamming with
Claude Bolling, and Miles Davis and his band are represented by
a track from their soundtrack to Louis Malle's Ascenseur pour l'Échafaud.
Other not so normal appearances are by Sonny Criss and Rhoda Scott
as well as Max Roach and Art Blakey. Of the Europeans, Georges Arvanitas,
Alain Gorageur, Eddy Louiss & Yvan Julien, and Jean Bonal are
included to offer an exciting portrait of the scene as it was expanding,
but also supporting the whole of jazz history - New York wasn't
even doing this at the time. The package is lavishly illustrated
with a 60-page booklet featuring tons of rare photographs of the
street and culture as well as musicians and clubs. There are concert
programs, reproductions of record covers, and excellent liner notes,
personal reminiscences, footnotes, etc. - all of them in both French
and English lexicons. The price is very attractive, making each
of these four volumes almost irresistible to historical jazz fans. |

Review:
Recording made in 1968 for the comedy 'La Vil Seducción',
directed by José María Forqué. Soul-Jazz
soundtrack, superb Hammond stuff composed and performed by
Lou Bennett, much tougher than his usual stuff. Includes the
extraordinary 'Movement', more than 6 minutes of fast Hammond
Jazz. |
