Original liner notes: |
|
|
'Arrival'
is a tune by Horace Parlan, which is recognizable immediately by
its particularly modern chord structure. Brooks performs brilliantly,
behind this melody, an Afro-Cuban inspired rhythmic accompaniment.
'Lament' is a Bennett/Brooks duo. On a beautiful ballad enriched
by the sumptuous harmonies played by the left hand, suggesting the
effects of an orchestra under the melodic line. Bennett gives an
exemplary image of his style as an organist. In particular, the
third chorus, which is a superb solo on the bass notes. In this
piece, Bennett uses "voices" and "colours" which he composed on
his "Bennett machine", the name he gives his organ. He explained
that "having taken away the lower keyboard of my Hammond, I fixed
the thing up to multiply the voices: piano, strings, brasses, vibraphones
etc. and put together a sort of orchestra." |
|
'Not
So Softly' is also by Bennett, who occasionally uses the
five-note scale in the minor key. The tempo this title is
taken is extremely fast and one can only admire the virtuosity
on Bennett´s pedal work as well. Brooks is especially good
here on toms and cymbals. 'Pentatitus' is a theme Bennett constructed
from the five-note scale, hence the title. 'Yearning' is a blues
in which he shows again his liking for unusual harmonies. There
are some evocations at the end of the piece of some church harmonies,
recalling the gospel music which he played such an important part
in Bennett´s musical upbringing. 'State Side Thing' is
also a blues, in 24 bars, which recalls many of the successful
themes of organists of the 1960´s, There is a great solo from
that underestimated musician André Condouant, and another marvellous
example of Brook´s polyrhythmes. |

Review:

Review:
On January 3, 1963 producer / writer Joachim Ernst Berendt organized
a concert in Germany featuring some of the top American jazzmen who
were then residing in Europe. Originally 13 songs released on 2 LP's,
8 of the performances have been reissued on this single CD; left out
are five of the seven numbers from Vol. 1 (three with clarinetist Albert
Nicholas and one a piece with bluesmen Champion Jack Dupree and Curtis
Jones). The CD contains a pair of fine features for tenor saxophonist
Don Byas (including a lengthy workout on 'All the Things You Are'),
ballad showcases for trumpeter Idrees Sulieman ('I Can't Get Started')
and pianist Bud Powell ('Round Midnight'), two numbers by a trio consisting
of guitarist Jimmy Gourley, organist Lou Bennett and drummer Kenny Clarke,
and a pair of Bill Smith originals featuring the clarinetist in a quintet
with altoist Herb Geller and guitarist Gourley. A fine bop-oriented
set of music by a variety of mostly underrated players. |

Reviews:
It has been called 'the third migration in the history of jazz'. The
first migration occured in the First World War and the early Twenties:
'upstream' from New Orleans to Chicago. The second was the migration
from Chicago to New York at the turn of the Thirties. And then, after
the end of World War 2, the third migration took place, from the USA
to Europe! Many of them are so significant that jazz history cannot
be written without mentioning their names. What is modern drumming without
Kenny Clarke? What is modern piano without Bud Powell. In the 40ies,
Don Byas was the first to relate the classic tenor saxophone style of
Coleman Hawkins to modern jazz. And what would be the history of the
New Orleans clarinet be without Albert Nicholas & the late, greatly
missed, Sidney Bechet? On January 3, 1963, producer / writer Joachim
Ernst Berendt organized a concert in Germany featuring some of the top
American jazzmen who were then residing in Europe. This is a fine bop-oriented
set of music by a variety of mostly underrated players. |

German critic Joachim Berendt organized an all-star
concert in early 1963 that featured a variety of American jazzmen
who were living in Europe. The results were issued on 2 Impulse LPs
and all of the music on the first volume (along with 2 selections
from the second set) was reissued on a single CD by GRP/Impulse. Drummer
Kenny Clarke leads a trio with organist Lou Bennett and guitarist Jimmy
Gourley for two songs, trumpeter Idrees Sulieman is featured on 'I Can't
Get Started', clarinetist Bill Smith and altoist Herb Geller team up in
a quintet for two of Smith's originals and the immortal pianist Bud Powell
plays 'Round Midnight' with a trio. The bop-based music is consistently
excellent, making the CD version easily recommended. |

Review:
A very hip set of soul jazz tunes from Belgian guitarist Rene
Thomas - one of the best European players of his generation.
The album features Thomas, backed by a group that includes Lou
Bennett, Jacques Pelzer, Gilbert Rovère, and Charles
Bellonzi. The groove is very hip - sounding a lot like a Prestige
or Blue Note organ/guitar session from the time, with lots of
longish tracks that feature plenty of room for solos. |
