Review:
Sarah Vaughan recorded frequently during her 3 years with Roulette, and all
sixteen albums she completed for them plus five previously unissued
tracks are included in this comprehensive 8 CD boxed set from Mosaic.
The gifted singer is heard in a variety of settings from superb small
group sessions, to big band settings, and various dates bordering on
easy listening; the sessions omitting the often syrupy string sections
are the cream of this bumper crop. It's a joy to hear Vaughan sharing
the spotlight with Joe Williams and the Count Basie Orchestra (with
its leader sitting out in favor of her regular pianist, Kirk Stuart)
in a swinging 'Teach Me Tonight' and a playful take of 'If I Were a
Bell'; it's a shame that they never recorded an entire album together.
Benny Carter's big band charts also bring out the best in Vaughan. With
the exception of the forgettable 'The Green Leaves Of Summer,' Billy
May's provides the vocalist with very compatible settings. The scaled
down session with guitarist Mundell Lowe and bassist George Duvivier
is among her greatest achievements of her career; the singer is relaxed
and stimula- ted by her accompanists. A similar follow up date with
Barney Kessel and Joe Comfort is equally rewarding. The sessions which
|
add strings, led by various musicians (Jimmy Jones, Quincy Jones, Lalo Schifrin, Joe Reisman, Don Costa
and Marty Manning) serving as both arranger and conductor,
vary greatly in quality. Often
first rate (and sometimes somewhat obscure) material is sabotaged
by heavy handed writing awash in strings. But for the most
part, Vaughan's gorgeous voice is able to overcome even bland
backgrounds. Mosaic remains the pinnacle of reissue labels
with this handsome box set, which includes detailed liner
notes by James Gavin, lots of session photos and a thorough
discography. |

Offering
up a somewhat confused selection of modern jazz classics (Coltrane,
Mel Tormé, and Mongo Santamaria on one disc?), Time Life still
comes through with a solid mix of bop and hard bop instrumentals and
vocals. Bookended by milestones from both eras, Dizzy Gillespie's 'A
Night in Tunisia' and Horace Silver's 'Song For My Father', Classic
Jazz: Jazz Masters takes in additional gems from such other essential
figures as Lester Young, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole,
Sonny Rollins, and Herbie Hancock. An enjoyable survey that's best suited
to neophytes. |

Of
all the volumes in the Mosaic Select series - as of this writing there
are eight - none is more welcome or unexpected than this set by the
late saxophonist, composer, and arranger, Curtis Amy. What these three
CDs contain are Amy's entire six-album output for the Pacific Jazz label
which includes his masterpiece, Katanga!. Amy's star continued to shine
in different contexts after he left the label, as a tough tenor with
Gerald Wilson and Ray Charles, as a soloist on the Doors' Soft Parade
and L.A. Woman albums, and of course, as an arranger and bandleader
in R&B singer Merry Clayton's group (the pair were married).
But it is the material here which cements Amy's place in the jazz pantheon.
Amy hailed from Houston, and is very much a part of the rich and varied
Texas tenor tradition. He migrated to Los Angeles to work, and fronted
numerous soul-jazz bands there before record- ing these six albums for
Pacific Jazz. The titles include the Blues Message and Meetin' Here (co-led
with organist Paul Bryant), Groovin' Blue (co-led with drummer Frank Butler),
and Way Down, Tippin' on Through, and Katanga! (the latter three as a solo
leader), all of them issued between 1960 and 1963. The first three albums
in this set offer the view of Amy as a bluesed-out soul wailer in a scene
dominated by the latter heyday of cool jazzers and West Coast hard boppers.
The players on these three recordings offered a glimpse into the deep R&B
roots of the Sunset Strip jazz club scene: along with Bryant and Butler,
trombonist Roy Brewster, drummer Jimmy Miller, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes,
and bassists Jimmy Bond and Clarence Jones played on these sessions, all
of them stalwarts on that steaming but criminally undocumented scene. The
4th album in the set, Way Down, features some new faces, most notably
Marcus Belgrave before his stint with Charles Mingus, and vibist Roy Ayers
before he went solo. Other players on the date include bassist George
Morrow, and pianist Victor Feldman. Tippin' on Through is a Live at the Lighthousedate,
and Amy pulled out all the stops with Larance Marable, Brewster, |
|
Bobby
Whitlock, and pianist John Houston. On all of these sessions, Amy is
deeply rooted in the rhythm and blues and soul traditions of the Texas
tenors. His combo work is restricted rhythmically perhaps, but it is
harmonically brilliant in the way it stretches these forms to the breaking
point at the front line, and the pieces on the live set dovetail and
turn back on themselves - dig the large modal frames Houston lays down
under Ayers' vibes: Ayers then extrapolates them for the horns to jump
off from. Texturally too, the way solos are layered and dove-tail and
turn back on themselves dynamically is quite remarkable, in that many
of the New York soul-jazz dates didn't get to this place until 1966
or so. Finally, Amy was already deeply under the sway of Coltrane on
Tippin' on Through: his own solos take the modal approach, and wind
around one or two phrases and blow them from the inside out, exploding
into torrents of sound without moving away from the blues.
Katanga! is a case in point all by itself. It remains a jazz classic
for its wondrously extrapolated and striated harmonics, its knotty
sense of interval, and Amy's melodic sophistication, which was deeply
saturated with Latin and African scalar considerations. This set also
features the trumpet playing of the little-known and under-recorded
Dupree Bolton, the elegant funk of guitarist Ray Crawford, and features
Amy on soprano, an instrument that he mastered and became an original
voice on, despite the fact that he had played it for such a brief time
previous to this session. Here, despite the elongated compositional
structures, the blues are never out of the limelight entirely. The title
track, written by Dupree Bolton, and "Lonely Woman" (Amy's version,
not Ornette Coleman's) are the highlights here, but there isn't a weak
millisecond on this slab. In all, this collection is its own revelation
- not only of Amy's overlooked artistry, but of the city of L.A. teeming
with fresh sounds and approaches before
the steamroller of rock and roll overshadowed it. |

Review by Alex Henderson
In the 21st century, the jazz vocal field is full of upstart female vocalists
who go out of their way to emulate the late Sarah Vaughan, artists who
feel that the best way to honor her memory is to try to sound exactly
like her. The problem is that Sassy was truly irreplaceable; so instead
of aspiring to be clones, the best thing jazz newcomers can do is search
for their own voices. That isn't to say that they shouldn't be Vaughan-influenced
- only that they should work on developing their own identities, and for
newcomers, there is much to be learned from a fine collection like Anthology
(especially when it comes to warmth, feeling, charisma and soulfulness).
Spanning 1944-1963, this 23-song, 77-minute CD takes a look at Vaughan
during a 19-year period - and from 'I'll Wait and Pray' in 1944 to a 1963
performance of Lionel Hampton's 'Midnight Sun' (arranged by Gerald Wilson),
she demonstrates just how compelling vocal jazz can be. The material is,
for the most part, offered in chronological order, thus enabling one to
hear the transition from scratchy 78-era sound to good '50s hi-fi mono
to early stereo; one also hears some deepening in Vaughan's voice during
those 19 years |
date,
and Amy pulled out all the stops with Larance Marable, Brewster, degree that her voice deepened in
the '70s and '80s). But whatever the amount of deepness in her voice,
Anthology never fails to illustrate the singer's originality; Vaughan
is as distinctive on Dizzy Gillespie's 'A Night In Tunisia' in 1944
and Juan Tizol's 'Perdido' in 1950 as she is on Thelonious Monk's
'Round Midnight' in 1963. Anthology is far from the last word on
Vaughan in the '40s, '50s or early '60s; it is, however, a nicely
assembled collection that paints a consistently attractive picture
of Vaughan's first 19 years as a recording artist. |

As part of Blue Note's Very Best series, pianist Horace Silver is spotlighted
on eight tracks recorded between 1954 and 1966. This set includes the
Silver-penned classics 'The Preacher', 'Song for My Father', 'Doodlin´',
and 'The Jody Grind'. Silver's backing bands include fellow Blue Note
alumni Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Blue Mitchell, Joe Henderson, and Junior
Cook, among others, making this a quality sampler for the novice at a
mid-line price. |

Review by Jason Ankeny
While working in Los Angeles in support of pianist Jack Wilson, Roy Ayers befriended the respected jazz critic and producer Leonard Feather, a relationship that ultimately yielded the vibist's first recording contract. Ayers' rare debut session, West Coast Vibes, remains the purest musical expression of his long career, with none of the commercial overtures of his landmark fusion efforts for Polydor. For listeners more familiar with latter-day jazz-funk efforts like He's Coming or Everybody Loves the Sunshine, the warm, contoured tones of Ayers' vibes will come as a revelation. Then as now, his approach to percussion is completely unique, and it's fascinating to hear him operate in such conventional jazz contexts minus the gimmickry of later dates. Most impressive are Ayers' collaborations with saxophonist Curtis Amy, whose soulful, kinetic contributions beautifully complement Ayers' leads. [This edition contains bonus tracks.] |

Review The Music for Lovers series from EMI and Blue Note spotlights the balladic nature and romantic side of artists who have recorded for its associated labels. Nancy Wilson may not get her due as a jazz vocalist, but as a romantic balladeer she has few peers, with a voice that communicates romance and sensuality. The 12 selections come from her best albums, including 1961's The Swingin's Mutual! (with the George Shearing Quintet), Yesterday's Love Songs/Today's Blues from 1963, and But Beautiful from 1969. |

The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SONG FOR MY FATHER includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal and liner notes by Leonard Feather. Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
Yet another jazz steal; this time, Steely Dan borrowed the title track for "Rikki Don't Lose That Number." Horace Silver should take heart, this is his most successful album and one that finds its way onto many recommended lists, not just for the jazz fraternity. Its strength is its accessibility, and in keeping with many piano leader albums Silver does not seek to dominate. The reissued CD version contains four extra tracks from the same 1963/64 sessions.
The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of THE REAL MCCOY includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal and liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder (1998, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey).
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. Recorded a mere two years after McCoy Tyner's tenure with the great John Coltrane quartet (a group considered by many to be among jazz's best-ever outfits), THE REAL MCCOY finds the pianist continuing to expand as a composer and player. The album marks Tyner's move from Impulse to Blue Note, and he sounds suitably energized, playing challenging post-bop that, while lacking the revolutionary fervor of A LOVE SUPREME, for example, still occupies the front ranks of the forward-thinking jazz of the era. Tyner is joined by his former Coltrane cohort Elvin Jones on drums, stalwart bassist Ron Carter, and the underrated saxophonist Joe Henderson. The quartet acquits itself admirably on five Tyner compositions, among which "Passion Dance" and "Four By Five" are the best. Coltrane's influence can be heard throughout the album, especially in the sinuous, modal approach and in Henderson's ambitious solos, but Tyner's powerful playing, wholly his own, steals the show. |

In honor of the great tenor saxophonist Ben Webster's 100th birthday, Storyville has brought out this two-CD compilation of rare studio and live cuts, culled mostly from the late, European phase of Webster's career. In 2007, Storyville had already put out an 8-CD box set called DIG BEN--the tracks to be heard on THE BRUTE AND THE BEAUTIFUL were actually put aside at time in anticipation of his centennial. Even more than the bebop-influenced Coleman Hawkins, Webster remained a highly traditional musician to the very end, but his rough-and-ready tone combined with his signature blues-inflected lyricism--the "brute and beautiful" of the title--guaranteed that he sounded fresh and contemporary to the very end.
Ben Webster was never a particularly innovative or experimental tenor sax player, so he often gets overlooked when discussions turn to the greatest sax players of the 20th century, but he could do two things as well as anyone who ever picked up the instrument. He could blow rough and raspy and he could go sweet as fresh sugar on a ballad until one would swear the whole world was weeping. Webster didn't expand, deconstruct, and re-form melodies; he simply made them speak in a way that made the heart swell. And luckily, he recorded a lot, which makes sets like this one possible. Divided into two discs, one featuring Webster's powerful, rough side and the other his aching, honey-filled ballad side (with a little bit of Webster at the piano as well), this little box set, released to honor the 100th anniversary of Webster's birth, makes for a fascinating late-career portrait of this delightful player, catching him in all of his styles, swinging, roaring, and sighing by turns. |
