Reviews:
These live 1965-66 performances by Horace Silver quintets - including Carmell Jones and Woody Shaw on trumpets, Joe Henderson on tenor, Teddy Smith and Larry Ridley on bass and Roger Humphries on drums - were issued on Silver's Silveto label but remain virtually unknown to Jazz fans. Silver turns in typically energetic solo work, but Henderson's atypical playing deserves the most attention. He experiments with varied tone colors and vocal effects, using multiphonics, screams and honks. He did not continue to emphasize these effects later in his career, but they enrich his playing. Also impressive, Shaw's work is influenced by Freddie Hubbard's but already has a distinctive quality. Shaw's unusual choice of intervals gives his lines a unique contour, and he performs with about as much power as he's ever displayed on record.
--
Rare and essential live recordings that capture the great Horace Silver Quintet in action at New York City's 'Half-Note'. Always a force to be reckoned with, Silver's mid-60ies band was consistently adventurous, original and funky, anchored in the steady rhythms of bassist Larry Ridley and drummer Roger Humphries, and steeped in the
passion of Joe Henderson's tenor saxophone. In many ways, these recordings are defined by Henderson's inspired playing, as he gets many chances to step out, drenching each track with his unique and masterful sound. Joe Henderson and Horace Silver both stretch exuberantly on the band's signature hit, 'Song For My Father', which actually surpasses the studio version in sheer excitement. There are two different versions of 'The African Queen', both imbued with a hypnotic intensity that escalates with every note of Woody Shaw's trumpet. On 'Que Pasa', Silver plays with subtlety, darkening the mood with gentle strokes of the keys. Trumpeter Carmell Jones shows such authority on 'The Natives Are Restless Tonight', that it is a wonder he did not attain greater levels of recognition. All of the five tracks on this CD are fairly lengthy, giving the band ample room to stretch. The only tragedy is that none of the songs are allowed to end naturally, and the premature fade-out of Silver's solo at the end of 'Song For My Father' is really frustrating. Nevertheless, this recording features the Horace Silver Quintet playing near the peak of its powers, and is easily recommended.

Review: original 1967 Czechoslovakia pressed Supraphon flip back scarce issue of the 1966 Prague Jazz festival. Great jazz-vocal album, featuring: Karel Ruzicka, Johnny Dankworth, Steve Race, Tony Carr, Gerd Dudek, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Rune Gustaffson, also featuring a line up of a Swedish Septet with Arne  Domnerus, The Paul Bley Trio, John Dankworth Quintet with the amazing jazz vocals of Cleo Laine, the Manfred Schoof Quintet (with Gerd Dudek playing his best solo ever on record), Jean-Luc Ponty with Pierre Favre and others plus a group led by Carmell Jones on trumpet, with a Czech rhythm section. This album has no fillers, every track is deadly up to the minute modal jazz (with the Dankworths being the obvious exception, whilst still good but different) and it must have been a hell of a festival. Irresistible for every jazz-collector, very recommended, very hard to find!

Review: Jean-Luc Ponty made a strong impression with his appearance at the `67 Monterey Jazz Festival. Just barely 26 at the time of this obscure but worthy album (his first to appear on an American label), Ponty is teamed with trumpeter Carmell Jones, altoist Leo Wright, pianist George Gruntz, drummer Daniel Humair and an unidentified bassist. In addition to five originals by either Ponty or Gruntz, they perform a pair of pop songs (including Miriam Makeba's 'Pata Pata') and the Beatles' 'With a Little Help From My Friends'. Already a very original player, Ponty's style at this early point was far beyond hard bop and looked a little toward both pop and John Coltrane.

Liner notes by George Gruntz

It's rather remarkable that the violin should only now have gained unqualified recognition as a Jazz instrument. But at least it did so with a bang ! Yet, according to Johnny St. Cyr, even in the earliest days of Jazz the violin was often used to lend class to a band. Usually the leader played the violin himself, not unlike the fiddling maestros of the European café orchestras. But Jazz was to develop as a music of ‘incitive sounds’ and violin choruses soon, though often quite unjustly, came to be regarded as ‘Vaudeville’ numbers. Today ‘violin renaissance’ is largely attributed to the appearance on the Jazz scene of Jean-Luc Ponty, a young frenchman who was the first completely rid his instrument of its fatal music hall character, Ponty himself says: “I don´t especially want to be a violinist, but a Jazzman”. I first met him in 1961 and was greatly impressed by his performance as a member of a French group that took part in the annual Swiss Amateur Jazz Festival in Zurich. But only 3 years later, thanks to my old friend and compatriot Daniel Humair, were we able to embark open a series of joint ventures which are among the most rewarding experiences of my career. By then, Ponty had developed into what I consider to be a truely great artist - quiet and modest in character, yet always displaying unerring musical taste and outstanding musicianship. Down Beat described him in the following way, “Ponty ... at 24 ... one of the most gifted and important of the youn- ger generation of French jazzmen” (1966); “... at 25 one of the most promising European Jazz musicians” (1967); ”... the 26-year-old phenomenon” (1968). Ponty´s career and his professional recognition are indeed proof that real artistic merit will gain lasting success, a heart-warming thought for anyone who truely appreciates Jazz !

Review: This 'live' concert from 1969 played a pivotal part in the late career of the great Stan Kenton. The reaction of the audience who were expecting a more avant-garde performance was to say the least disapointing and latterly caused Stan to create the new one.

Reviews: The best jazz orchestra recording ever. A virtual Who's Who of American and European players give life to an absolutely incredible sound portrait of Berlin in the Cold War. Soloists Carmell Jones (tp), Leo Wright & Klaus Marmulla (alto saxes), and Slide Hampton ! (tb) sparkle in the setting of Nelson's composition. Nelson himself is transcendent as an alto saxophone soloist. Search out this recording !

One of the more modernist efforts by Oliver Nelson, and proof that he could write and play with a shockingly sharp edge, despite all of the mainstream arrangements he was doing at the time. He leads the 'Berlin Dreamband', which is made up of European players, and some

made up of European players, and some of the best American expatriots of the time-like Carmell Jones, Leo Wright and Slide Hampton. The album is divided into two long pieces: 'Berlin Dialogue For Orchestra' and 'Impressions Of Berlin' - and both have the feel of some of Francy Boland's more "serious" large pieces for the Clarke/Boland Big Band.
--
Mixing Nelson’s easily recognizable style with avantgarde flourishes and lyrical passages, this tribute to the city of Berlin is fascinating to hear, even on repeated listens. Outstanding players, Carmell Jones, Slide Hampton and Leo Wright and flawless performances bring Nelson’s two long-form jazz compositions to life.

Review: The Jay McShann orchestra of the early 40s, best known for having Charlie Parker among its sidemen, only lasted a few years, but made its impact on jazz history. In 1989, pianist McShann had a rare opportunity to record with a big band, a truely all-star outfit. Included among the illustrious players on this CD are trumpeters Clark Terry, Terence Blanchard and Carmell Jones, trombonist Al Grey, the tenors of Hal Singer, Jimmy

Heath and James Moody, altoists Benny Carter and Phil Woods, bassist Jimmy Woode, drummer Mel Lewis, and vocalist Ernie Andrews, among others. With arrangements by Ernie Wilkins and Nat Pierce, virtually all of the players have opportunities to solo, and one comes away particularly impressed by the versatility of Andrews, who fills the roles of a lot of different singers. Highly recommended.

Liner notes by Chuck Haddix
Fueled by riffs and powered by tight ensemble work, Kansas City jazz rolled across the nation during the mid 1930s. In subsequent years, the gospel of Kansas City jazz spread around the world, impacting the course of jazz music internationally. A common myth about Kansas City jazz is that the tradition ended in 1940 with the fall of the Pendergast political machine. That obituary was a bit premature, as pianist Tim Whitmer & friends aptly illustrate with 'Humorous Intentions' - Kansas City jazz lives! Tim Whitmer and the KC Express are keeping the tradition alive, mere blocks from where it all began in downtown Kansas City. Night after night, Tim's blend of stellar musicianship and entertaining banter delights packed houses at the Phoenix Piano Bar and Grill. Whitmer has never let his formal musical education interfere with his music. Beginning with the City Light Orchestra, he has led outstanding bands that have showcased both up and coming talent and the many jazz legends who make their home in Kansas City. All these facets of Whitmer's music: the respect for the tradition, the combination of older and younger players and artistic integrity come together on 'Humorous Intentions' to create a real gem. Rusty Tucker's exuberant vocal on 'Let the Good Times Roll' gets 'Humorous Intentions' off to a rollicking start. The title track, an original composition by Whitmer, features a playful musical dialogue between Whitmer and Jim Mair on soprano saxophone. The perennial, 'Kansas City' is punctuated by the half-shouted vocal style of the legendary Speedy Huggins and evokes the intemperate spirit of old Kaycee,

Bird's 'Little Suede Shoes' begins with a pensive introduction by Whitmer and moves into a bright Latin groove underlined  by Chico Battaglia's fine percussion work. The 3 Basie charts 'Down for the Count', 'Shining Stockings' and 'Kansas City Shout' are the perfect vehicles for Jim Mair's big-toned tenor sax. Carmell Jones' outstanding trumpet work on 'Shining Stockings' exhibits once again why he is in demand for recording sessions with such jazz luminaries as Horace Silver and Gerald Wilson. The lovely 'Poem for George' is a fitting tribute to Whitmer's mentor George Salisbury, who was an educator and gifted pianist. Sterling interpretations of four standards: 'There Will Never Be Another You', 'Summertime', 'Route 66' and 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' round out 'Humorous Intentions'. The intention here may be humorous, but Whitmer & the KC Express music is the work of serious artists who succeed as a cohesive unit in working within and adding to a revered tradition, while having a lot of fun in the process.

A complete quintet session by Johnny Griffin - appearing here for the first time ever on CD. It marks his only preserved encounter with famous Swedish trumpeter Rolf Ericson. Six of the eight tracks on this disc that lists tenor giant Johnny Griffin and Swedish trumpeter Rolf Ericson as leaders was recorded over two days in May of 1978 -- a great period creatively for Griffin. The other players on the date are pianist Fritz Pauer, bassist Lucas Lindholm, and drummer Ronnie Stephenson. The program consists of originals such as Ericson’s smoking “Double Digit” and the elegant “Fragrance,” and some fine covers including a solid reading of Bud Powell's “Oblivion.” The final two tracks on this set were recorded a few months later with Griffin leading an entirely different band that included pianist Stanley Cowell, drummer Roy Haynes, and bassist Cecil McBee. Both cuts are excellent readings of the jazz standards "Billie’s Bounce” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” All of this material has been available before on separate LP compilations, but the Jazz Lips imprint assembled the entire Griffin/Ericson session here for the first time on CD This disc features very fine straight-ahead blowing throughout.

Review: Simply put, this is a great session. Pianist Don Bennett, a veteran pianist (48 at the time) with an advanced bop-based style, is heard leading a top-notch crew of talented Chicago players. This session, which, other than the lengthy All the Things You Are, originally came out on Southport, will be a bit of a revelation for not only does it show the somewhat obscure Bennett to be a major stylist but it features Art Porter (best-known for his crossover efforts for Verve Forecast) as a high-powered bop soloist; why doesn't he record an album of his own on this level? Another star is the frequently exciting tenor man Ed Peterson (heard here before he recorded for Delmark) and the alternating trumpeters (Art Hoyle and Steve Smyth) also fare well. Don Bennett not only provided five originals (including 'About Time' which sounds like a Blue Note standard from the early 60s) but arranged sections that give this CD a coherent unity. Considering! the consistently strong and enthusiastic solos and the freshness of the music, straightahead jazz collectors can consider this release to be essential.

AMG Bio
An underground legend in Chicago, Don Bennett has never gotten the recognition he deserves as a pianist and a talent scout. He started piano lessons when he was four and was part of the Chicago jazz scene by the late 50s, inspired by Ahmad Jamal, whom he used to see on a nightly basis. In the 1960s, Bennett moved to Los Angeles, studied with Phineas Newborn, and worked on the local scene with Harold Land, Carmell Jones and Curtis Amy, among others. He cut an album with Amy in the late 60s and led a trio date after returning to Chicago, but neither have ever been released. In 1978, he quit music altogether, working at a variety of day jobs (including as a private investigator) for 10 years. In 1988, Bennett returned to jazz with his talents unimpaired. He spent time living in New York and then moved to Holland in 1993. Bennett cut a CD in Chicago in 1990 for the Southport label, which was later reissued by Candid. In addition to such fine players as trumpeter Arthur Hoyle and tenor saxophonist Ed Peterson, Bennett featured the young unknown Art Porter (on alto and soprano) on the bop-oriented material, which included five of the leader's originals.
