Carmell Jones didn´t play on
the Paul Whiteman album 'The Complete Capitol Recordings' (CAPITOL
30103), which was mentioned here before. Whiteman conducted a band
at a session which was recorded years before many of the musicians listed
could have been either known or available. The album and the personnel
are two different items which have been mis-matched ! (CONTE CANDOLI,
CARMELL JONES, RAY WETZEL, SHORTY ROGERS, EDDIE BERT, BOB BROOKMEYER,
JIMMY GIUFFRE, BOB GORDON; BILLl HOLMAN, JACK MONTROSE, HAROLD LAND,
ART PEPPER, FRANK STROZIER, PETE JOLLY, LOU LEVY, PETE RUGOLO, FRANK
STRAZZERI, RUSS FREEMAN, PAUL MOER, JIM HALL, RED MITCHELL, LEROY VINNEGAR,
MONTY BUDWIG, EDDIE SAFRANSKI, CURTIS COUNCE, RALPH PENA, LEON PETTIS,
SHELLY MANNE, LARANCE MARABLE). |

Review:
This five-CD set traces the development of the big band in jazz from
the end of the swing era up until the 1990s. 58 different orchestras
are heard from, generally in one selection apiece although there are
some exceptions (most notably Duke Ellington). The music is divided
into four categories (Road Bands, Part-Time Bands, Studio Bands and
Avant-Garde Bands) but many groups really fall into overlapping genres.
The set's greatest fault is that the recordings (which range from Ted
Heath to Sun Ra) have not been programmed in strict chronological order
which, more than any other method, would have best shown off the music's
evolution. However there are many rarities included on this set, the
88-booklet is quite informative, and fans of modern jazz big bands will
find much to savor. |

Review:
Although one does not think of the 1950's and 60's as a period when
jazz had a lot of "hits", occasionally a fluke recording would make
the charts and catch on. 19 fairly popular cuts (although not 'Take
Five' or 'Hello Dolly') from the 1949-67 period (all but the first
two are from 1959-67) are included on this Rhino CD collection in their
'45' single versions which were often expertly edited to be briefer
than their LP counterpart. Such artists as James Moody (a version of
'I'm In The Mood For Love' that was the basis for 'Moody's Mood For
Love'), Count Basie, Charles Mingus, the Jazztet (Killer Joe), Gene
Ammons, John Coltrane (a greatly truncated version of 'My Favorite
Things'), Eddie Harris (Exodus), Herbie Mann, Stan Getz (Desafinado),
Jimmy Smith, Hank Crawford, Vince Guaraldi (Cast Your Fate To The
Wind), Jimmy Mc Griff, Mongo Santamaria, Donald Byrd, Horace Silver,
Ramsey Lewis, Cannonball Adderley (Mercy, Mercy, Mercy) and Wes Montgomery are all represented in this interesting sampler. |

Review:
Jazz Profile compiles highlights from Horace Silver's recordings for
Blue Note, drawing a rough portrait of his career. The compilation features
both soul-jazz and hard-bop cuts, giving a good sense of Silver's depth
and range. While there isn't anything here that will appeal to collector's,
Jazz Profile does offer a nice introduction for curious listeners. |

Review:
Saxophonist/flutist Bud Shank was a key player in the West Coast jazz
movement, first coming to prominence in the late 1940s and early 1950s
playing with Stan Kenton, Laurindo Almeida and the Lighthouse All-Stars.
This 60-song set traces his early development as a bandleader with his
mid-'50s quartet, which included pianist Claude Williamson, and his
early-'60s quintet, which featured trumpeter Carmell Jones and guitarist
Dennis Budimir. ...Sharing the fifth disc with Barefoot Adventure is
the bluesy album New Groove, recorded six months prior to Barefoot Adventure
with a similar line- up, basically the band Bud was holding forth with
at the Drift Inn during the same time period. This grouping introduces
trumpeter Carmell Jones, and Shank plays both alto and baritone as if
unaware that West Coast jazz is supposed to be 'neat but not greasy'.
More fine guitar from Budimir who contributes a smokin' solo on Gary
Peacock's 'Liddledabllduya'. ...While the soundtrack to Slippery When
Wet is a laid back affair, the soundtrack for Barefoot Adventure, recorded
just two-and-a-half years later in November 1961, is much more muscular
in tone. From the first staccato notes Da DA Da Da DA Da, Da DA
Da Da ...as little footprints travel up and down the screen introducing
the title and opening credits to the moment when the rest of the band
jumps in you know this movie and its accompanying score is going to
be a stoker. Bud Shank is working with a sextet this time around
with only bassist Gary Peacock on board from the SWW sessions; Dennis
Budimir replaces Billy Bean on guitar, and the addition of Carmell Jones
on trumpet and long-time Shank associate Bob Cooper on tenor contributes
to a fuller, tougher sound. Shank himself alternates between alto
and baritone this time out and when he and Cooper trade riffs the results
are inspired. I used to wonder if this Bob Cooper could be the
[surfer] Bob Cooper and I would compare photos from the back cover of
the album with photos of Bob Cooper surfing Makaha shorebreak in the
first Surfer to see if all that coolness could be rolled up into one
guy. It wasn't but both Bobs were very cool nonetheless. As
are the rhythm section of Gary Peacock and drummer par excellence Shelly
Manne. |

Although the date for this session is commonly given as
November 28, Shank's ledger shows it to be the 29th. (H)
Original soundtrack to Bruce Brown’s 1960
surfing documentary. Shank had titled the fifth song Well,
'Pon My Sole. It was a clerical error at Pacific Jazz that
altered the title and lost the pun. |

Review:
This very interesting collector's LP is comprised of versions of 'Señor
Blues' and 'Tippin' that were originally part of a 45, along with seven
previously unissued performances from a variety of sets by the Horace
Silver Quintet (in addition to a trio rendition of 'Que Pasa'). General
collectors should get the pianist/composer's regular Blue Note releases
first but Silver's longtime fans will find this fresh music fascinating
and quite enjoyable. |

Review:
Although this CD sticks to Joe Pass' early period and cannot be accurately
called "The Best", it does feature the guitaist in prime form. Rarest
among the selections are three numbers from Pass' debut, Sounds of
Synanon. In addition, the guitarist is heard on four selections from
his classic For Django date; he performs 'More' from a movie theme record
and 'But Beautiful' from his Catch Me date; and he makes guest appearances
with Gerald Wilson's big band, Richard Groove Holmes and Les McCann.
Although sticking much more to single-note lines than he would in his
later Pablo days, Joe Pass was already instantly recognizable and a
major (if at the time underrecognized) guitarist. Worth picking up. |

Review:
Unlike many other box sets currently available, this 4-CD package is
actually a sampler taken from Joe Henderson's many recordings for Blue
Note; all but three selections date from 1963-69. Out of the 36 selections,
26 feature the great tenor as a sideman and some are from sessions not
reissu- ed in quite awhile. Henderson is instantly recognizable (his
distinctive tone has not changed much since 1963) and an asset to each
of these performances. Also included in the box is a very attractive
40-page booklet that is highlighted by his complete Blue Note discography.
This set is particularly recommended to listeners only vaugely aware
of Joe Henderson's powerful music.
--
The Blue Note Years features 36 tracks beginning with Henderson's 1963 Blue Note debut
'Una Mas' to 1990's 'For The Moment'. This set also contains many rare
Blue Note sessions including a live performance with the Thad Jones/Mel
Lewis Orchestra. Included with the 4 discs is a 40-page booklet with
previously unpublished photographs by Francis Wolff and a complete discography. |
