| Reviews: A
compilation of two mid-60’s LP’s on the German
Saba label (Happy Girl & The Hip Walk), Two Originals
is a very solid set, containing several great examples of
inside/outside playing. Featuring Davis (who has spent the
last 30 years as a music educator) on tenor, flute and Trane-inflected
soprano on many originals, a few well selected standards
and tunes by Larry Young and Carmell Jones, it has rapidly
become one of my favorite discs. Davis is a player of great
range and exceedingly good taste, with an alternately biting/warm
tone not | |

| to Europe? too
far removed from Joe Henderson’s playing in the same
era. This is easiest to see in the version of Larry Young’s
‘Theme From Zoltan’, previously recorded by
Young (on organ) and Shaw with Henderson on Young’s
essential ‘Unity’ (one of the recent series
of ‘Rudy Van Gelder’ re-issues on Blue Note
and a must have). Other standouts are ‘The Flute In
The Blues’, ‘Evolution’ and ‘The
Hip Walk’. If you can find this at the store grab
it. If you can’t, try the internet. If that fails,
what better excuse for a timely trip to Europe? |

| Review:
In 1964, responding to producer Alfred Lion's encouragements, Horace
Silver ended a five-year run with his quintet and got himself some new
players. Volume Two of this best of collection opens with the new quintet's
classic 'Song for My Father' - a warm, evocative, uniquely Horace Silver-like
tune said to be a homage to his Cape Verdean roots. Silver's solo is
understated and carries itself with a royal bearing. The new group is
also heard on the laid back and minimal 'Que Pasa', a one-chord, hypnotic
vamp. 'Cape Verdean Blues' is one of Silver's best commercial, sexy,
and wrapped around some simple yet outstanding piano playing. On 1966's
'Jody Grind', Tyrone Washington capably replaces Joe Henderson on tenor
sax and Silver turns in a great solo, exploring melodic ideas that other
players might reject because of their straight-forwardness. The album
ends with 1972's 'Gregory Is Here'. Silver's new quintet includes the
young Brecker Brothers on trumpet and sax, in an interesting marriage
of the '60s and '70s. | | The Best Of Horace Silver Vol. II: The Blue Note Years recorded: 1964-1971

| Granted,
a single-disc overview of Blue Note's finest recordings can't help but
offer listeners more than a myopic view of the label's true scope, but
for jazz neophytes, this nine-track collection will undoubtedly serve
as a tantalizing taste of the company's riches. The song selection,
though lacking few surprises, is consistently wonderful - how could
a disc featuring John Coltrane's ‘BlueTrain’, Herbie Hancock's
‘Maiden Voyage’, Horace Silver's ’Song for My Father’
and Lee Mor- gan's ‘The Sidewinder’ be anything but? - and
purists' complaints aside, for new fans it's a solid introduction to
the Blue Note magic. | | The Best Of Blue Note, Vols. 1 & 2 / Various Artists issues: LP BLUE NOTE BST 2-84429 ; >CS BLUE NOTE 4BN 2-84429 ; 1993 CD CAPITOL

| Review:
Very cool Blue Note compilation of stuff that was recorded
(mostly) by the Pacific Jazz label in the early 60's, but
which is now in the Blue Note/EMI catalog. The comp focuses
on the harder side of the LA scene, and features on many
of the great Los Angeles soul jazz players - many of whom
often get neglected in discussions of that city's Cool Jazz
scene. There's loads of nice cuts, and the whole

| thing
wails nicely. Highlights include 'Burnin' by Paul Bryant,
'Where It's At' by Charles Kynard, 'Montgomeryland Funk' by
The Montgomery Brothers, 'Turkish Black' by The Jazz Crusaders,
'Sad March' by Carmell Jones, 'This Here' by Groove Holmes,
'Pygmy' by Billy Larkin & The Delegates, and 'Soul Sisters'
by Lennie McBrownie & The Four Souls. Nice stuff, with
17 cuts in all ! |
